Volunteering
The Salesians of Don Bosco in South Asia view volunteering as a powerful way to instill values of service, solidarity, and community engagement among young people. In a gesture of solidarity with the flood-affected people of Assam, St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Harmutty, a Don Bosco institution, came forward to extend financial assistance of rupees two lakhs to flood victims in Sivasagar district. A delegation from the school travelled to Sivasagar to assess the situation of the flood-affected people and extend support to families struggling with the aftermath of the devastating floods. The relief fund was raised through the generous contributions of the teachers, students, parents and past pupils of St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Harmutty.

The heavy rainfall and the consequent floods have devastated the state of Kerala, claiming the lives of many and displacing thousands since last week. Rescue efforts are in full swing with the help of local administrators everywhere. The rainfall has partially subsided in central Kerala, but the threat of landslides and severe waterlogging across multiple districts persists. Kerala has seen a series of natural disasters in the past four years, causing loss of lives and property. The residents of the Kottayam district have witnessed a tragedy of such magnitude for the first time.

The 12th Asia-Oceania online Regional Congress of Don Bosco Past Pupils marking the 150th anniversary of the World Association of Past Pupils concluded on June 26, 2021. The two-day event focused on Salesian Delegate, Young Past Pupils and Networking. Delegates and members from 23 out of 28 countries of the region participated. First-timers included participants from Bangladesh, Nepal, Mongolia, Solomon Islands and Sri Lanka.

India won its freedom from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947.

Besides the unstinting service of India`s medical professionals and other frontline warriors in the fight against the deadly virus, the networks of friends, family and colleagues mobilized to share resources and combat misinformation have contributed to mitigating the situation. Social media and messaging apps also have facilitated this process, allowing relative strangers to lend a hand. Following this cue, the social media groups and networks established by the Alumni Association of Don Bosco School, Alaknanda, proved invaluable to its members and others.

The DB Egmore GCC COVID Care Centre is a joint initiative of Don Bosco School Egmore, DB Past Pupil doctors, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), DBPPA Egmore, and various past pupil batches of DB Egmore. With collaboration from various sectors, the team set up a 104-bed (with oxygen concentrators) COVID Care Centre at Don Bosco School, Egmore, to supplement the ever-increasing demand for oxygen beds in the city.
