KATHMANDU : In the face of the enormous human tragedy that resulted from the 7.8 earthquake that flattened much of Nepal on 25 April, the sons and daughters of Don Bosco rose valiantly to the occasion, keeping alive his legacy of compassionate response to the afflicted, a` la Turin`s cholera epidemic of 1854, translating their characteristic pastoral charity into speedy and wide-ranging humanitarian assistance.

Mumbai: Don Bosco Balprafulta, Mumbai received the `` Rashtriya Sanman Award`` and ``Quality Brand India Award 2015 -17`` on 30 April, 2015, the eve of Maharashtra Day, at Hotel Kohinoor Continental, Andheri. The award is a recognition and appreciation for the social and humanitarian work done in the field of promotion and protection of child rights by Balprafulta from its inception in 2000.

Chennai: The 9th International Short Film Festival of India (ISFFI),Chennai hit the screens of selected city theatres on 25-26th March 2015, unrolling a vibrant selection of short films, documentaries and animations. Out of the 1150 entries that came in for the festival from 66 countries, 66 short films from 20 countries were selected and screened during this two day festival. The Indian entries were from Karnataka, Chennai, Mumbai, Haryana, Andhara Pradesh, Kerala and Kolkata.

Bangalore: Don Bosco Skill Mission (DBSM), the master training skill development centre of Don Bosco Tech Society was inaugurated in Bangalore, on 19 March 2015 by the Salesian Regional Councillor for South Asia Fr. Maria Arokiam Kanaga, SDB. DBSM is a state-of-the-art innovation centre of the Salesians of Don Bosco in India for the training of trainers in imparting professional skills to the youth of India.

(ANS - Lahore) - The heroic guard who last Sunday in Lahore prevented a suicide attacker from the Jamaat ul Ahrar group from entering a crowded St John`s Catholic Church was named Akash Bashir. Akash was a past pupil of the Salesian technical school located in the predominantly Christian neighbourhood of Yuhannabad. He caught hold of his assailant, using his body as a shield. Akash lost his life and saved the lives of many other people.

. Hyderabad: The Salesian Provincial Conference of South Asia (SPCSA) held its annual General Assembly meeting on 24-25 February, and the SPCSA Council meeting on 26-27 February 2015 at the Salesian Provincial House of Hyderabad. About 40 Salesians from the 12 provinces of the region took part in the two day General Assembly. The participants comprised of the provincial Superiors of all 12 provinces of India and Sri Lanka, and the heads of commissions of the various sectors of apostolate and network groups. The Provincial Conference is headed by the Regional Councillor Fr. Maria Arokiam Kanaga.

. Hyderabad: The Salesian Provincial Conference of South Asia (SPCSA) met at the twin city of Hyderabad for its annual General Assembly and Provincial Conference Council Meeting, 24-27 February 2015. The meeting was preceded by a day of hectic review and planning sessions for the various regional commissions and Networks of the Salesian apostolate in South Asia on 23 February. The entire meeting was hosted at the Salesian Provincial House of Hyderabad by the Provincial Fr. Balaraju Raminedi and his team.

Annual meeting of the Vocational Guidance Commission of the South Asia region was held at Don Bosco Nitika, Kolkata from 5-6 February. 15 delegates from 9 provinces of the South Asia region took part in the meeting. The participating provinces were Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi, Panjim and Silchar. The two day meeting focused on `The Nuances of Vocational Guidance`, and was animated by Fr. Ajoy Fernandes, the Vice Provincial of Mumbai province.

The Department of Geography of Salesian College conducted on 24 January the XIth One Day Research Scholars` Workshop on the theme `Qualitative and Quantitative Perspectives of Research`at its Siliguri Campus. Dr. Sudip Bhattacharya, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, University of North Bengal, was the chief guest as well as the resource person for the sessions.

As a fitting to Tribute to Don Bosco in this Bicentenary Year, the legendary Kolkata Youth Fest has been revived today after a gap of nearly 30 years with over 500 young boys and girls gathering at Don Bosco Park Circus for a four day programme from 23 to 26 January.

Jorhat: The annual cultural tourism extravaganza, Ethnique, in Jorhat, Assam, came to a grand finale on 4 January, with the heart thumbing dance show by Rhythm of Dance, led by Mr. Bapi Saikia of Baghchung. Prior to the dance show was a fashion parade in both ethnic and modern outfits by the students of The Ramp Modeling Institute, put together by Mr. Pranjit Chetia. Miss Tridisha Baruah , Jorhat`s own child and one of the busiest models in the entire India, walked the ramp together with Daniel Brunen of Germany for the two-rounds fashion parade. Anchoring the parade was Miss Mausuma Farheen, a JB College student.

. Rome : The first Strenna of Fr Angel Fernandez Artime as Rector Major was presented to the Salesian Family yesterday, 27 December, at the Generalate of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in Rome. The strenna titled, ``Like Don Bosco, with young people, for young people``, seems like a return to the essence of the Salesian charism, reports ANS the Salesian News Agency in Rome.

. CHENNAI: Rev. Fr. Jeromedhas Varuvel SDB, belonging to the Salesian Province of Chennai (INM) has been nominated as the Bishop of Kuzhithurai, a new diocese carved out of Kottar diocese in Tamilnadu, South India. The official announcement was made at 16.30 hours, IST today.

SILIGURI: Nazareth Bhavan, the Salesian Novitiate of Kolkata province in Siliguri organized a daylong seminar on the Salesian Brother on 29 November, where both the novices and Salesian brothers presented papers on the vocation, identity and apostolate of the Lay Salesian and held serious discussions to the benefit of the participants.
