News reported by: Arun Raj SDB

Don Bosco Arts and Science College, Kilpauk, in collaboration with DB Jananam and Eeranilam, inaugurated a two-day art exhibition on July 6 at DB Square on the college campus. The exhibition, themed "Addiction to Drugs and Its Evils in Society," highlighted the message of a drug-free society through creative expression.

Organised to observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the exhibition forms part of the Tamil Nadu Government's statewide anti-drug awareness campaign, being conducted from July 1 to August 31, 2026.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr J. C. D. Prabhakar, Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, who commended the institution for using art to promote social responsibility among young people. He encouraged students to become ambassadors for a drug-free society by raising awareness in their schools, colleges, and communities.

Presiding over the inaugural programme, Dr Maria Arokiaraj SDB, Principal of Don Bosco Arts and Science College, underscored the growing threat of substance abuse and its far-reaching consequences for individuals, families and society. He emphasised that educational institutions have a vital role in fostering values, resilience and informed decision-making among the youth.

The exhibition showcased paintings, illustrations, posters and visual installations created by students, highlighting the destructive effects of drug addiction, tobacco use, alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse. The artworks also conveyed messages of prevention, rehabilitation, mental well-being and healthy lifestyles, encouraging visitors to reflect on addiction's social impact while inspiring hope and positive change.

Open to school and college students across Chennai on July 6 and 7, the exhibition provided an interactive platform for young people to express creativity and strengthen public awareness against substance abuse.

Among the dignitaries present were Dr Aathira Naevis Prabhakar of Grace Foundation and Utopia Therapy, who encouraged participants to produce and submit short films on the anti-drug theme for public viewing. Also in attendance were Fr Arokia Raj SDB, Director of the DB Jananam Movement; artist Mr Tanilarasu, Founder of the Eeranilam Movement; Rev. Dr Anbu Francis SDB, Vice Principal of the college; faculty members, students, invited guests and Salesians from SIGA Polytechnic College.
