Salesian Philosophy Students Complete Skill Development Programme at AIDA

News reported by: Fr. Blasius Tete sdb, IND

First-year philosophy students of Salesian College, Dimapur, completed a two-week Skill Development Programme at AIDA, gaining practical skills for youth empowerment and social development. The programme trained students to become effective agents of positive change among youth and marginalised communities.

From May 26 to June 9, the programme offered leadership training, life skills, health awareness, entrepreneurship, and community development. It equipped students to address the needs of young people and marginalised communities.

The initiative was led by Fr. Dr Roy, Director of AIDA, and Fr. Elow Samuel, Rector of Salesian College. It showed the institution’s commitment to combining experiential learning with academic formation.

The programme began with an orientation to AIDA’s work, followed by sessions on personality development, leadership, communication, and responsible citizenship. These modules helped participants better understand social challenges and improve their ability to guide young people.

Health and wellness were key. Students attended sessions on hygiene and preventive care. They also had basic medical screenings, including blood pressure and sugar checks.

A major highlight was practical training in mushroom cultivation, where students learned sustainable agricultural skills for rural youth. During a field visit to Third Mile, they observed waste management practices, including Black Soldier Fly technology, that offer eco-friendly solutions for communities.

Participants trained in detergent production, gaining small-scale entrepreneurial skills for youth self-employment. Creative workshops on pen holders and reusable bags encouraged innovation and the use of local materials.

Basic electrical training enhanced participants’ practical skills. They learned essential maintenance and safety skills useful for schools and community centres.

The programme included daily basketball coaching that promoted teamwork, discipline, leadership, fitness, and sportsmanship.

The training concluded with a thanksgiving gathering, during which participants expressed gratitude to the trainers, staff, and organisers. The programme empowered future educators and leaders by equipping them with practical skills and a strengthened commitment to community service, reinforcing its main message of fostering social impact through skill development.
