Don Bosco Konkan Development Society (DBKDS) organised a two-day soft skills and job-readiness workshop for 120 students of Guardian Angel Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (IHMCT), Curchorem, on July 18 and 19, to prepare them for hospitality placements.

The workshop aimed to prepare students for placements in the hospitality sector by focusing on communication skills, emotional intelligence, professional behaviour and digital networking.

The first day, themed “The Human Edge & Communication,” focused on guest relations and workplace communication. Students participated in role-plays and practical exercises to understand hotel operations and customer service requirements.

One of the main activities, the “Mind-Reader Challenge,” trained students to identify guest concerns through non-verbal cues. The session encouraged them to move from a task-based approach to a more empathetic, proactive service style. Students were also introduced to practices such as the “10/5 Rule” and “Last-Mile Courtesy.”

To improve spoken English and interview readiness, participants engaged in a “60-Second Pitch” exercise, practising brief professional self-introductions in English. The exercise aimed to build confidence for guest interactions, interviews and campus placements.

The second day focused on “Digital Footprint & Networking,” highlighting the importance of online presence in recruitment. During a “60-Minute LinkedIn Sprint,” students created or updated their LinkedIn profiles, wrote professional summaries and added career-focused headlines.

By the end of the workshop, students had published their first industry-related posts and connected with professionals online.

The programme sought to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry expectations by providing students with practical exposure to communication, service etiquette and professional networking. Organisers said the initiative would help participants approach placements and careers in hospitality with greater confidence and preparedness.
