St. Theresa’s Parish Marks 50 Years of Salesian Mission in Hyderabad
St. Theresa’s Parish, Sanathnagar, was filled with joy and gratitude on October 2 as it celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the Salesian Mission in Hyderabad, coinciding with the parish feast of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus. The day reflected fifty years of pastoral dedication, youth empowerment, and community service by the Salesians of Don Bosco.
The solemn Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Cardinal Poola Anthony, Archbishop of Hyderabad, with Bishop Prakash Sagili of Khammam Diocese delivering the homily. Nearly 40 priests, including Fr. Kishore SDB, Vice Provincial of the Salesian Province of Hyderabad, concelebrated the Mass. A grand procession carrying the statue of St. Theresa preceded the liturgy, uniting hundreds of families in prayer and devotion.
Cultural performances by parish youth and children added colour to the celebration, followed by a community meal that fostered togetherness. Parish Priest Fr. Jose K expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Salesian community for their half-century of devoted service to the parish and the wider city.
The Salesian presence in Hyderabad began on August 22, 1975, when Fr. John Lens and Fr. Joseph Kottekar assumed charge of the parish at the invitation of Archbishop Samineni Arulappa. Over the decades, the Salesians established several key initiatives, including Don Bosco School, Motinagar (1979), the Bosco Institute of Electronics (1986), which evolved into Don Bosco Degree College, and Don Bosco Youth Services (DBYS), launched in 1992 to empower young people through counselling and animation.
Concluding the jubilee celebration, Fr. Jose thanked clergy, religious, and lay collaborators for nurturing the Salesian spirit of “educating and evangelizing the young, especially the poor.” The event, coordinated by Fr. Jose K, Fr. Santa Murthi, Fr. E.J. Mathew, and Fr. Justin, ended on a note of joy and renewed commitment to the Salesian mission.
