Transformative capacity building for BEST and DREAM tutors

- Joseph Leo SDB

A successful capacity-building programme was conducted on August 6, at Don Bosco, Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, specifically for tutors associated with the BEST (Building Effective Solutions Together) and DREAM (Dedicating Resources to Educating and Mentoring towards Combating Child Labour) projects.

For the past 25 years, SURABI, the Project Development Office of Chennai Province (INM), has been dedicated to creating positive changes in the lives of rural and tribal communities in Northern Tamil Nadu. Their efforts have been focused on 135 Community Learning Centres (CLCs), serving as crucial educational hubs in underserved regions. The BEST Project (Building Effective Solutions Together) operates 86 CLCs, and the DREAM project (Dedicating Resources to Educating and Mentoring towards Combating Child Labour) with 20 CLCs, both proving to be highly impactful. Through these evening study centres, SURABI has touched the lives of 3595 tribal and rural children residing in seven locations of Thalavadi, Kadambur, Kotagiri, Gedilam, Tiruvannamalai, Thirukazhukundram, and Katpadi.

The first session in the capacity building programme for the tutors, led by Father Anto Sagayaraj, Rector Don Bosco, Siharam, focused on effective teaching through storytelling. In the second session, facilitated by Father John Christopher, Director of DBSARC, tutors learned innovative teaching methods. The final session, enabled by Father Joseph Leo, Director of SURABI, covered creative approaches to teaching letters and sounds.

A total of 43 tutors benefitted from the intervention, gaining invaluable knowledge in effective learning methodologies and constitutional rights awareness with a positive impact on students and the community.
