Students Turn Trash to Treasure at Earth Day Event
Salesian College Siliguri marked International Earth Day with a student-driven initiative that turned discarded materials into purposeful creations. Organised by the Radio Club under its EcologyFirst program, the “Trash to Treasure Competition cum Exhibition” emphasised participation and creativity over mere presentation.
The day began with a keynote and guided meditation by Rector Fr. Dr Tomy Augustine, who urged students to “see value where we once saw waste.” Students then brought their “trash to treasure” creations for an artistic exhibit that reflected innovation and ownership.
“This initiative is about enabling students to experience sustainability, not just understand it,” said Anand Kumar, founder of the Radio Club and EcologyFirst.org.
Patron of Radio Club Fr C.M. Paul added, “When students transform what is discarded into something meaningful, responsibility becomes personal.” Dean and Green Campus coordinator Prajwal Chettri praised the depth of participation, noting that “education translates into action” through such efforts.
Supported by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia and the Don Bosco Green Alliance, EcologyFirst continues to expand through workshops, collaborations, and outreach. Its guiding principle remains simple: sustainability is best learned by doing.
On a day dedicated to the Earth, students gave the message its strongest form—by turning what was discarded into something worth keeping.
