Rector Major Celebrates Eucharist at Polur, Calls Faithful to Live the Gospel Through Active Goodness
News written by: Fr. John Britto and Fr. Anto John
On Sunday, February 15, 2026, the Rector Major of the Salesians, Fr. Fabio Attard, presided over the Holy Eucharist at Sacred Heart Church, a mission renowned for its deep-rooted faith life shaped by local culture, committed education, pastoral care, and sustained social outreach.
The Polur mission, originally entrusted to the Salesians through the pioneering efforts of early missionaries, has long remained a vital centre of the Salesian charism in the region. Over the years, it has played a key role in forming young people, uplifting rural communities, and strengthening the life of the local Church through faith-based service.
The Rector Major’s arrival was marked by a warm and vibrant traditional welcome, blending local folk expressions with the dignity of a formal guard of honour. The reception reflected the joy and pride of the faithful in welcoming the Successor of Don Bosco to their midst. Parishioners from Sacred Heart Church joined representatives from St. Antony’s, Veeralur, Don Bosco SIHARAM, Tiruvannamalai, and the mission at Jawadhi Hills, making the Eucharistic celebration a strong expression of communion within the Salesian Family.
In his homily, the Rector Major offered a thought-provoking reflection that challenged a minimalist understanding of the Christian life. He reminded the congregation that discipleship is not merely about avoiding wrongdoing, but about actively choosing and doing good. Drawing inspiration from the legacy of early missionaries, he called on the faithful to become the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world” through simple, consistent acts of goodness. Emphasizing Don Bosco’s vision, he urged everyone to live as “good Christians and honest citizens,” particularly for the sake of the younger generation.
The significance of the visit was further deepened through moments of fraternity and shared fellowship. Earlier in the day, the Rector Major was warmly received by Most Rev. Neethinathan D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Chengalpattu, who conveyed his good wishes for the apostolic visit. Following the Eucharistic celebration, the Rector Major shared a meal with the FMA Sisters at the convent, further strengthening bonds within the Salesian Family.
