Two Salesians Elected to Lead Indian Catechetical Association
News written by: Bastin Nellissery (INK)
The 29th General Body Meeting of the Indian Catechetical Association (ICA) was held at Samanvaya Theology Centre, Bhopal, from February 11 to 13, bringing together 61 participants comprising priests, religious, seminarians, and lay representatives from across the country. The three-day assembly reflected on the theme “Catechesis in the Age of Social Media and AI,” engaging participants in scholarly dialogue and practical exploration of one of the most pressing pastoral challenges of the present time.
A key highlight of the gathering was the election of the new ICA leadership team. Fr. Gilbert Choondal, SDB (INK), was elected President, while Fr. George Chinnappan, SDB (INT), was chosen as Secretary. Their election marks a significant moment for the association, with two Salesians entrusted with guiding the national catechetical body in an era of rapid digital transformation.
The academic and formative dimensions of the meeting featured seven research papers and two keynote addresses that addressed both theoretical and pastoral aspects of social media and artificial intelligence. The first keynote address was delivered by Fr. Limson, CMI, of Christ University, who traced the evolution of social media and AI, highlighting their opportunities, challenges, and implications for faith formation.
In the second keynote, Fr. Gilbert Choondal presented the magisterial perspective on digital engagement, emphasizing the emergence of a hybrid catechetical model that integrates online and offline experiences. He referred to this approach as “onlife catechesis,” where digital and analogue realities are harmoniously brought together to support faith education.
Other sessions examined ethical concerns surrounding social media and AI, as well as the need to develop catechetical resources that meaningfully engage these emerging realities. A special study session analyzed Adolescence, a Netflix series, prompting critical reflection on the lifestyles of Gen Z, shaped by social media culture. The deliberations also included hands-on exposure to AI tools and group discussions that led to proposals for social media and AI policies for catechists and parents.
The assembly's reflections were consolidated into a Final Statement, which was discussed and formally approved on the concluding day. Participants also took part in a brief Bhopal Darshan, adding a cultural dimension to the academic programme.
The ICA expressed its gratitude to Fr. Lawrence, CMI, and the CMI community at Samanvaya Theology Centre for their generous hospitality. The meeting concluded with the announcement that the 2027 General Body Meeting will be held in Mizoram on the theme “Catechesis for Missionary Discipleship.” Fr. David Lalthanmawia, Catechetical Director of Aizawl, was appointed as the Local Coordinator for ICA 2027.
