Young Priests Renew Commitment to Indian Constitution and Pastoral Ministry
The Young Priests’ Quinquennium Meeting of the Province of St Joseph (INH) was held on 11–12 November at Don Bosco PARA (People’s Action for Rural Awakening), Ravulapalem, where 30 young priests gathered for two days of reflection on Indian constitutional values, pastoral responsibility, and youth engagement. The meet sought to strengthen their commitment to justice, liberty, equality and fraternity—values central to both the Indian Constitution and the Church’s mission.
A key highlight of the programme was the two-part session led by noted political economist Dr Parakala Prabhakar. Speaking on Constitutional Values and Challenges to Constitutional Values, Dr Prabhakar offered a compelling account of the complex political and social realities that shaped India’s Constitution. He revisited the deep fractures, communal violence, and ideological battles that marked the nation’s transition to independence, underlining the enduring relevance of the Preamble. Drawing from decades of involvement in rights-based movements, he urged the participants to remain resolute. “The journey to uphold constitutional values must continue despite struggles and intimidations,” he said. “Results may not always be immediate, but perseverance is our duty.”
A panel discussion followed, featuring Dr. Jose Maliekal, Ms. Subbayamma, and Advocate Rajesh Edida. The panel examined the role of religious citizens in addressing contemporary constitutional challenges. The speakers emphasized the need for clarity, courage and informed engagement among clergy navigating an increasingly polarised socio-political environment.
The focus then shifted to youth ministry, with a session jointly led by Fr. Palla Joseph, Fr. Pramod Bagsingh and Fr. Prasanna Kumar. They examined changing youth cultures, shifting expectations and the pastoral sensitivity required to guide young people meaningfully in today’s complex social landscape.
On the second day, Fr Thomas Pallithanam, Rector of the PARA community, facilitated group activities around the themes “What do I believe when I say I believe?” and “Planning to Engage with the Youth.” These reflective exercises encouraged the priests to examine their own convictions, strengthen their pastoral identity and develop realistic plans for youth engagement.
The meeting concluded with an open house session with Provincial Fr Santiagu Thomas, who listened to the concerns and aspirations of the young clergy. He urged them to remain steadfast in their mission, remarking that priestly life today requires “courage to stand for truth, compassion for the suffering and a constant readiness to serve.”
The Quinquennium Meet concluded with a renewed sense of purpose, reaffirming the priests’ dual commitment to upholding constitutional values and fostering a compassionate and credible pastoral presence in their communities.
