Former Salesians Launch Friends of Don Bosco to Support Salesian Mission in Hyderabad
The Salesian Province of St Joseph (INH) launched the Friends of Don Bosco (FDB) on the 211th anniversary of the birth of St John Bosco, bringing together former Salesians who wish to remain connected with the Salesian Family and contribute to its mission among young people.
The initiative was launched following an invitation from Provincial Fr Santiago Thomas, SDB, and Vice Provincial Fr Garlapati Kishore, SDB. Eight former Salesians, accompanied by their family members, attended the inaugural gathering and expressed their desire to continue living the Salesian spirit and supporting the Congregation’s mission despite having left religious life.
The programme began with a Holy Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Fr Garlapati Kishore, with Fr Sarath, SDB, concelebrating. In his reflection, Fr Sarath emphasised that leaving the Congregation need not mean leaving the Salesian Family. The values and spirit acquired through Salesian formation, he said, can continue to shape one’s life, relationships and commitment to young people.
Following the Eucharist, the participants shared lunch before engaging in a two-hour discussion on the identity, objectives and future direction of the new association. The members expressed their commitment to preserving fraternity with the Salesians and becoming a source of support for the Salesian mission.
The group has adopted the motto, “Friends to SDBs and Primary Support to the Salesian Charism.” The FDB aims to serve as a bridge between former Salesians and the Salesian Congregation by offering their experience, talents, resources and time in support of young people and the wider mission.
During the meeting, Gallela Arogya was elected the first Executive President, while G. Naresh Babu was elected Vice President and Secretary. The members also welcomed Fr Garlapati Kishore, SDB, as the association's Spiritual Director.
Launching the FDB on Don Bosco’s birthday added significance to the occasion. Participants pledged to remain inspired by Don Bosco’s concern for young people, particularly the poor and vulnerable, while continuing their individual vocations and professional responsibilities.
The FDB plans to formulate its mission statement, establish an organisational structure, strengthen fraternity among former Salesians and identify concrete ways to support the Salesian mission in the Province of St Joseph.
