Golden Reunion: Yercaud Novices Reconnect After 50 Years in Bangalore

The first batch of novices from Yercaud, Tamil Nadu, came together for a poignant reunion after five decades, gathering from September 11–13 at the Salesian Provincial House in Bangalore. Fourteen members of the 1974 batch—ten Salesian priests and four ex-Salesians—travelled from across India and Sri Lanka to reconnect, reflect, and celebrate the bonds that time could not break.

Formed under the guidance of their Novice Master, the late Fr. Rosario Krishnaraj, the group once numbered 32. Eleven have since passed away, while others were unable to attend. However, three members from the USA, Canada, and India joined virtually in a lively Zoom call, extending the spirit of fellowship across continents.

The three-day reunion blended prayer, laughter, and heartfelt sharing. Participants described it as deeply spiritual and profoundly human. They visited the futuristic Don Bosco College and the Kristu Jyothi Theologate, their alma mater, evoking memories of formative years spent together.

For many, the gathering was more than nostalgia. Regis, one of the attendees, called it a “time-warp experience,” explaining: “Our reunion has been a journey back in time, where the past wasn’t just remembered, but felt. It mended the threads of time between who we were and who we are now, strengthening our shared history and sense of belonging.”

Amid laughter over old jokes and private stories, the group also created space for vulnerability, sharing personal struggles in an atmosphere of trust. The reunion concluded with a renewed commitment to sustaining their bond, with plans to meet again next year at “The Retreat” in Yercaud.

Even after their departure, the “Signature Tune of Batch Reunion” composed by Fr. Bento D’Souza lingered in their minds, echoing the enduring strength of friendship and fraternity that has lasted half a century.
