Altar Servers Experience Faith, Fellowship and Mission

Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Gedilam, in collaboration with Deepagam, organized a two-day pilgrimage for altar servers from May 13 to 14. A total of thirty-three altar servers from three parishes, Tagore Nagar (Puducherry), Maranodai, and Thennangudi, participated. Salesian priests and catechists guided them.

The program began with the rosary, recreation, and a goodnight talk that encouraged attentiveness to God’s presence in daily life. Fr. Selva Kumar, Assistant Parish Priest of Tagore Nagar Parish, introduced the Gedilam Salesian community and its educational mission. Fr. John Christy, SDB, Youth Ministry Delegate, along with Fr. Stanley Lawrence, SDB, Rector of Gedilam, and Fr. Selva Kumar, celebrated the Mass for the participants.

The altar servers visited several sacred sites in the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore, including the Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine in Villianur, Gratia Plena Church, Holy Spirit Church in Tagore Nagar, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Samba Kovil), and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Catechists and local clergy offered historical and spiritual insights at each site. Fr. Gilbert Jeyaraj, SDB, Rector of Tagore Nagar Parish, warmly welcomed the group and expressed his joy at the children’s enthusiasm.

They also visited the historic Periyanayagi Madha Shrine in Konankuppam. Fr. Selva Kumar presided over Mass, and Fr. Devasagayaraj, Shrine Rector, shared insights on Tamil Catholic heritage and inculturation efforts led by Fr. Joseph Constantine Beschi (Veeramaamunivar).

Fr. Stanley Lawrence concluded the pilgrimage with a message of gratitude and encouragement, affirming the children’s pilgrimage as a powerful experience of faith, fellowship, and mission.
