St. Anthony’s College Shillong Establishes Salesian Cooperators Centre
News reported by: Michael Makri (INS)
St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, formally established a new Centre of the Association of Salesian Cooperators and welcomed seven aspirants as full members after two years of formation and discernment, marking a significant milestone in its 92nd year.
The ceremony took place at the college auditorium in the presence of the college management, students, members of the Stephenian and Margratian alumni communities, families of the new members, formators and Provincial Councillors. Mrs Ireland Doonai, Provincial Coordinator, also attended.
Fr Joseph Anikuzhikattil Luka, SDB, Provincial Delegate for the Salesian Family, read the decree formally erecting the new Centre at St. Anthony’s College and received the Promise of the seven new Cooperators on behalf of the Association. Fr Luka, who had initiated the process in 2023 during his tenure as Rector of the college, witnessed its completion with the establishment of the Centre.
Through their Promise, the seven members committed themselves to living the Gospel in the spirit of St John Bosco, serving young people and collaborating with the wider Salesian Family. Their commitment followed two years of formation that included prayer, study of the Project of Apostolic Life, reflection and discernment, accompanied by their formators.
Founded by Don Bosco and formally approved in 1876, the Association of Salesian Cooperators comprises lay men and women who participate in the Salesian mission while remaining rooted in their families, professions and communities. A Centre at St. Anthony’s College provides a structured platform for lay collaboration in the Salesian mission within an institution that has served the youth of Shillong and the region for more than nine decades.
With the inauguration of the Centre and the Promise of its first seven members, St. Anthony’s College begins its 92nd year with a strengthened network of lay collaborators dedicated to carrying forward Don Bosco’s mission among young people.
