Clerics Reflect on Salesian Formation and Mission at Maram

A two-day recollection for Practical Training (PT) clerics from the Nagaland and Manipur regions was held on August 21 and 22 at Don Bosco College Maram. It brought together 20 young Salesian clerics and the Vice Provincial for renewal, formation, fraternity and reflection on their vocation and mission.
The recollection focused on the Salesian Ratio, the Congregation’s guiding document on Salesian formation and life. The programme aimed to deepen the Salesians’ identity and prepare them for leadership and service in the Province, the Salesian Congregation, the Church, and society.
A central theme was the Salesian formation principle: “We are not formed for the mission; we are formed in the mission.” The reflection stressed that formation extends beyond classrooms and formation houses, and that community life, apostolate, prayer, relationships, and service are integral to every Salesian’s growth.
Drawing from the biblical account of Samuel and Eli, the recollection highlighted spiritual accompaniment. As Samuel needed Eli’s guidance to recognise God’s call, young Salesians likewise need spiritual directors and mentors to discern God’s will and mature in their vocation.
The second day focused on personalisation and participation, encouraging each brother to take responsibility for his own formation rather than remain a passive recipient of formation programmes. The clerics were invited to become active participants in their spiritual, human, and apostolic growth.
The recollection also addressed unity in diversity, recognising differences in culture, language, social context, and personal experience across Salesian communities. Despite these differences, the participants were reminded that all Salesians share one charism, identity, and mission.
At the heart of the reflection was the Salesian vocation to young people: to be signs and bearers of God’s love. The recollection encouraged the clerics to grow as men of God, authentic Salesians, and effective leaders committed to the mission.
