Free Health Camp Brings Medical Relief and Welfare Access to Migrant Families
News reported by: Miss Siddhi Bheda for BIS Mumbai
In an effort to address the urgent healthcare needs of migrant and underserved families, Bosco Boys Home, Borivali, Mumbai, under Project Suraksha – Migrant Desk, organised a free health camp on January 20 at Sai Baba Mandir, Gali No. 12, Ganpat Patil Nagar, Dahisar. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with SPARK Foundation and NIIT Foundation and included registration for E-Shram, ABHA, and Ayushman Bharat cards, enabling community members to access essential government health and social security schemes.
Ganpat Patil Nagar is a densely populated settlement where residents face daily challenges. Narrow, muddy lanes—particularly during damp weather—and the absence of a proper drainage system have led to unhygienic conditions. Many families live in vulnerable conditions, increasing their exposure to illness while remaining largely excluded from affordable and formal healthcare services.
Recognising these realities, Bosco Boys Home initiated the health camp as part of Project Suraksha – Migrant Desk, with the objective of promoting preventive healthcare and facilitating access to key welfare schemes. The programme was specifically designed to reach migrant workers and daily wage earners who often neglect health concerns due to financial constraints and a lack of awareness.
The day began with Bosco Care staff and volunteers arriving early to prepare the venue. Registration desks, medical examination areas, and dedicated counters for card registration were systematically arranged within the Sai Baba Mandir premises to ensure smooth coordination and accessibility.
The camp offered general health check-ups, blood sugar testing, and blood pressure monitoring. Medicines were provided free of cost based on medical assessment, and individuals requiring further medical attention were assured of follow-up support. Doctors and volunteers worked with patience and sensitivity, ensuring that every beneficiary was treated with care and dignity.
“We usually ignore our health because treatment is costly. Today, we received free check-ups and medicines, which is a big relief for us,” said one resident. Echoing this sentiment, a representative from Don Bosco Care stated, “Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. Through Project Suraksha, we aim to ensure that migrant communities are not left behind.”
By the end of the day, nearly 80 people had benefited from free healthcare services, while around 20 individuals were successfully registered for E-Shram, ABHA, and Ayushman Bharat cards, strengthening their access to long-term healthcare and social protection.
