Parish Priests Called to Be 'Shepherds of Hope' for a Renewed Society
In a powerful gathering of faith and fraternity, the Province of Guwahati convened its Parish Priests’ Animation and Meeting at Mario Hall, Panbazar, under the theme “Shepherds of Hope: Renewing Pastoral Zeal in the Spirit of Don Bosco.” The event served as a clarion call for spiritual renewal and pastoral clarity, urging priests to become beacons of hope in a rapidly changing world.
Fr. Sebastian Kurichel, SDB, Provincial, opened the day by reminding the assembly of their vital role: “Let this be a moment to rekindle our pastoral enthusiasm and fraternity. Be enthusiastic in your ministry, work with clarity, and prepare your parishioners to enter into the great Jubilee of 2033.” His words set the tone for a day dedicated to reflection, collaboration, and action.
The keynote animation was led by Most Rev. Bishop George Palliparampil, SDB, Bishop of Miao Diocese, who inspired participants with a stirring message: “We cannot separate our Salesian identity while working in the North East Region. The Salesians are the pride of North East India.” He emphasized that every priest is called to be a “shepherd of hope,” especially in today’s complex pastoral landscape, drawing deeply from the spirit of Don Bosco.
The afternoon session, facilitated by Fr. Amit Chama Lakra, SDB, focused on practical steps forward through a collaborative discussion titled “Action Plan and Way Forward.” Priests engaged in planning concrete strategies for pastoral renewal, with special attention to community engagement and mission clarity. Amit is the Co-ordinator of Education to Faith Dimension.
Adding a broader social dimension, Fr. Ignatius Gari, SDB and Fr. Joy Kachappilly, SDB shared insights on the Mission Poverty Eradication (MPE) initiative, a regional effort to uplift marginalized communities and integrate faith with social transformation.
The day concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Fr. Albert Thyrniang, SDB, who praised the spirit of unity and commitment among the participants. The participants departed with renewed zeal—not just for their parishes, but for the society they serve.
