NEISBS Biennial Conference Highlights the Transformative Power of the Bible

The Northeast India Society for Biblical Studies (NEISBS), in collaboration with Sacred Heart Theological College (SHTC), Shillong, hosted its Biennial Conference-cum-Seminar from September 16 to 18 on the theme “The Bible as Transformative Power.” The three-day event brought together theologians, scholars, and students from across Northeast India to explore the role of Scripture in shaping values, cultures, and communities.

The inaugural session, moderated by Fr. Dr. Joseph Anikuzhikattil, SDB, began with a Scripture reading and prayer by Fr. Dr. Denis Lalfela, SDB, followed by a cultural prayer dance performed by ITLR students. Fr. Dr. Jose Chunkapura SDB, Director of SHTC, extended a warm welcome, while Fr. Dr. B. Lalnunzira, President of NEISBS, delivered the inaugural address. The keynote address by Fr. Dr. Jose Varickasseril SDB was chaired by Dr. Abeni Patton, Vice-President of NEISBS.

Day one featured five academic papers addressing the Bible’s influence in diverse contexts: Word of God as the Source of Perennial Values by His Grace Thomas Menamparampil DD, The Bible and Transformation of Cultures by Dr. Rosy Zoramthangi, The Bible in Ecclesial Worship by Rev. Dr. Aloysius Hemrom, Jesus Christ the Word Became Flesh by Rev. Dr. Joseph S. Palakeel MST, and The Bible and Education by Rev. Dr. Robinson Teron.

On September 18, sessions included The Bible and Political Responsibility by Dr. Fellystone B. Marak, The Challenge of Biblical Interpretation by Rev. Bro. Abraham M. Antony SDB, and The Bible and Ecumenism by Dr. W. Renchamo Kikon.

The conference concluded with a summing-up by Fr. Dr. George Maliekal SDB, followed by the General Body Meeting and election of new office bearers. The gathering reaffirmed the transformative power of the Bible while strengthening scholarly collaboration across the region.
