News written by: Fr Chittissery Joseph
The 3-day meeting of the National Council of the Don Bosco Alumni Association of India, held at the Administrative Training Institute at Kohima, Nagaland, came to a close today. The meeting was inaugurated by Dr. Chumben Murry, Minister for Agriculture of the State of Nagaland and a Don Bosco alumnus. The minister called on the members to ``pay back to Don Bosco for what they received from him by contributing to the society in which they find themselves.``
Welcoming the gathering, Provincial Delegate Fr Chittissery Joseph said, ``It is Don Bosco and the young people who have brought us together here; keeping them in mind will help us to remain relevant at all times,`` he added.
In his keynote address, Fr. K. J. Louis, the National Delegate of the Alumni in India, pointed out it was time for the alumni to ``pass from their affective attachment to a working commitment. This commitment is to be shown in the way they accomplish projects in favour of the needy in our society,`` he said.
The national president Mr. Rajesh Gupta said that the DB Alumni Association is one of the largest in the world. The Don Bosco Alumni are present in 128 countries in the world and in 28 of the 29 states of India. He spoke of the influential positions the alumni occupy today in India and around the world. Mr Gupta announced that work on the Don Bosco Chamber of Commerce was nearly complete and that it would soon be launched. He also mentioned that some 40 alumni from India will be attending the next Asia-Australia Congress of DB alumni at Manila in December.
Mr Francis Pelevituo Solo, Dimapur Provincial President, welcomed the gathering to Nagaland and expressed his hope that all would have a taste of the rich culture and traditions of Nagaland.
A special guest of honour was Mr Peter Hunter from England, member of the World Council of the DB alumni, who spoke of his adventurous 266-day non-stop trip around the world, traversing 46 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
