Young Salesians Receive Training in AI Tools and Ethical Use

A one-day training programme on “Animation on AI Tools” was held at the Don Bosco Provincial House on August 24, focusing on the basics of Artificial Intelligence (AI), its practical applications, and ethical use.
A one-day training programme on “Animation on AI Tools” was held at the Don Bosco Provincial House on August 24, focusing on the basics of Artificial Intelligence (AI), its practical applications, and ethical use.
The programme was facilitated by Fr Mattam Xavier SDB and Fr Blasius Tete SDB, who guided participants through the theory and practical use of emerging AI technologies.
Fr Xavier led the foundational session on Artificial Intelligence, describing it as an attempt to reproduce human intelligence through machines. He traced its development from programming and data processing to machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, and generative AI.
A key part of the training focused on AI ethics. Fr Xavier stressed that AI should be fair, safe, transparent, and responsible. That technology must remain at the service of the human person rather than replace human judgment, relationships, and responsibility.
Participants examined bias in AI systems, especially when training data is incomplete, unrepresentative, or influenced by existing social prejudices. Examples from recruitment systems, chatbots, and facial recognition technologies showed how biased data can lead to discriminatory outcomes.
The session also introduced Magnifica Humanita as a framework for safeguarding human dignity and the human person in an increasingly AI-driven world.
Fr Blasius introduced participants to AI-powered tools designed to support communication, education, research, content creation, and pastoral ministry. The practical session familiarised them with platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Canva, Gamma, NotebookLM, Google Flow, Suno AI, ElevenLabs, Clipchamp, DeepSeek, Grok, Pinterest, Pixabay, Freepik, Fish Audio, and QuillBot.
Through demonstrations and hands-on exposure, the participants explored how these tools could enhance their future educational, pastoral, and social communication ministries.
The training emphasised that AI should be approached as a tool that, when used ethically and responsibly, can support the Salesian mission while preserving human dignity, discernment, and accountability.
