Mangalore Welcomes First Group of Salesian Cooperators in Historic Ceremony

In a landmark event for the Salesian Province of Panjim Konkan at Mangalore, 19 candidates made their promises as Salesian Cooperators of Don Bosco during a solemn Eucharist at Devakrupa Convent, Attavar, on Tuesday, April 8, 2026. The ceremony marked the first time a group of Salesian Cooperators had been established in the diocese.

The Eucharistic celebration was held within the Easter Octave, and the timing lent special symbolism to the rite. As each candidate pronounced their promises, they held lighted candles, signifying the light of Christ that the Cooperators are called to carry into their families, workplaces, and society.

Vice Provincial of the Salesian Province of Panjim Konkan, Father Banzelão Texiera, SDB, was the main celebrant of the Holy Eucharist and delivered the homily. Reflecting on the role of Cooperators in the Salesian Family, he said, A Cooperator is not just a helper, but a member who shares in Don Bosco’s charism and mission for the young and the poor.  He drew attention to Mamma Margaret, Don Bosco’s mother, calling her his first collaborator and Cooperator, whose quiet service and faith shaped the beginnings of the Salesian work.

The 19 new Cooperators completed a year of formation under the guidance of Father Anisio Mota, SDB, province delegate for Salesian Cooperators of the Panjim Konkan Province, and Father Jason Pinto, SDB, from the Salesian community at Attavar. Their preparation included study of Salesian spirituality, the life of Don Bosco, and the apostolic commitments of the Association of Salesian Cooperators.

The promises were received in the presence of Shirley Fernandes, the province coordinator for Salesian Cooperators, and Theresa Barreto Cruz, the formator who accompanied the group through their formation journey.

Also present for the occasion were Father Maxim D’Souza, SDB, rector and principal of Don Bosco CBSE School, Trasi, and Father Sunil Pinto, SDB, of the Mumbai Province, who joined the local Salesian community in witnessing the historic step. Even aspiring Co-operators from Trasi, Madathyar and Kalathur were also present on the occasion.

With these promises, these new Cooperators join the wider Salesian world in having a formal group of Cooperators to collaborate in the mission for youth. The new Cooperators will now begin their apostolate in their parishes and professions, guided by the motto of the Association: Work and Temperance.
