Maschio Cup 2025 Unites Mumbai’s Salesian Youth in Spirited Football and Throwball Contest
The grounds of Don Bosco Youth Services (DBYS), Matunga, came alive once again as the Maschio Cup returned for its fourth consecutive edition, drawing young athletes from Salesian institutions across the Mumbai region. Held in honour of the late Fr. Maschio Aurelius, the annual tournament showcased exceptional sportsmanship, teamwork, and the growing enthusiasm for both football and throwball among the youth.
The day began on a solemn and inspiring note with a prayer song rendered by Chris Lobo, Music Teacher at Don Bosco International School (DBIS). His melodious performance set a reflective tone for the event, fostering a spirit of unity and gratitude. Fr Edwin Dsouza, Rector of the Shrine, extended a warm welcome to the participants, encouraging them to compete with passion and fairness.
This year’s tournament witnessed a remarkable surge in participation. Sixteen football teams registered for the highly anticipated event, joined by five throwball teams, including girls’ squads, marking a significant step towards inclusive youth sporting engagement. The registration period itself brimmed with energy as players arrived eager to represent their institutions and vie for the prestigious Maschio Cup.
Football matches commenced with the pool rounds, dividing the sixteen teams into four groups. What followed were nail-biting contests marked by tactical play, determination, and impressive athletic flair. Each team fought hard to secure a place in the top ranks that would lead them toward the knockout phase.
Adding a new dimension to the tournament, the organizers introduced the first-ever throwball competition. The league rounds highlighted strong coordination, team spirit, and agility, culminating in an exciting knockout match that kept supporters on the edge of their seats.
The day concluded with an award ceremony presided over by Vice Provincial Fr. Robert Pen. In football, Golden Savions, Andheri, clinched the championship title, with Don Bosco College, Kurla, finishing as runners-up. In the newly introduced throwball category, St. John Bosco, Borivali, emerged victorious, followed by DBIT (Don Bosco Institute of Technology), Kurla.
