MSMHC Pre-Novices Celebrate Founder’s Day in Siliguri

The Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC), one of the 34 officially recognized groups of the Salesian Family worldwide, celebrated their Founder’s Day with a solemn Eucharistic celebration and a family circle.

The congregation was founded by Salesian Bishop Stephen Ferrando on October 24, 1942, in Shillong, to serve the pastoral and educational needs of Northeast India. Bishop Ferrando envisioned a missionary community of indigenous women religious who would carry the Gospel to the margins with simplicity and courage.

The day’s highlight was a solemn Eucharistic celebration in the MSMHC convent chapel, presided over by Rector and Principal of Don Bosco School, Siliguri, Fr. V C Jose, who gave a homily on the life and legacy of Venerable Bishop Ferrando.

At the community gathering, a creative presentation by the pre-novices showcased the congregation’s history and its outreach in education, healthcare, and social empowerment across India and abroad.

The MSMHC Sisters continue to serve in schools, hostels, dispensaries, and mission centres, embodying the Salesian spirit of accompaniment and loving kindness, including the Salesian College Girls hostel in Siliguri.

Sr Jacinta Jyrwa, Formation Coordinator at Siliguri, shared: “Founder’s Day is not just a date—it’s a call to live with courage and compassion. Our young sisters are learning to serve with joy, just as Bishop Ferrando envisioned.”

As the MSMHC congregation continues to grow in India and overseas, the Siliguri hub has, in addition to the formation house, a nursery school, a Higher Secondary school, and the care of the Don Bosco Shrine parish and its substations.
