Tamil Nadu Hosts First-Ever Adivasi Karam Festival, Uniting 3,000 Migrant Workers

News reported by: Fr Francis Bosco SDB

In a landmark cultural celebration, the Loyola Institutions in South Avinashipalayam, Tiruppur District, hosted Tamil Nadu’s first-ever Adivasi Karam Festival. Organized by Don Bosco Payanam (DB4M Tiruppur migrants desk) in collaboration with the All Assam Youth Welfare Association of Tamil Nadu, the event drew nearly 3,000 Adivasi migrant workers from Assam, Jharkhand, and Odisha.

Traditionally observed in the month of Bhadra (August–September), the Karam Festival or Karam Puja is one of the most significant rituals of Adivasi communities across India. Rooted in agrarian traditions, it centers on the sacred Karam tree, symbolizing life, fertility, and prosperity. Branches of the tree are decorated and worshipped as offerings to Karam Devta, protector of crops, people, and villages.

The day in Tiruppur began with a solemn Holy Eucharist celebrated by Fr. Arul Raja, INM, along with six concelebrating priests. A ceremonial lamp was later lit before the martyrs, signifying sacrifice, unity, and light.

The cultural segment unfolded with spirited performances of Adivasi music and dance. Regional groups showcased their heritage in colourful displays of rhythm and movement. Chief Guest Hon. Minister and Member of Parliament, Mr. K. Subbarayan, lauded the dignity and contributions of migrant labourers in Tamil Nadu.

A major highlight was the musical performance led by renowned Adivasi singer Victor Lakra and his orchestra, which electrified the gathering. Guest artists such as Bishnu Ekka from Assam and Isha Kandulna from West Bengal inspired young participants to dance in circles, reviving the festival’s traditional vibrancy.

The day concluded with the resounding slogan, “Jai Johar, Jai Adivasi!” – echoing the pride, resilience, and unity of a community celebrating its heritage far from home.
