L A F Programme Shapes Youth Leaders in Hyderabad
The Leaders and Animators’ Formation (LAF) Programme was held at BIRDY (Bosco Institute of Research and Development for Youth), Hyderabad, from September 12 to 14, on the theme “Salesian Youth Leaders as Pilgrims and Beacons of Hope to the Family, to the Church and to the Society.” The three-day gathering brought together 85 participants from the Provinces of Kolkata, Delhi, and Hyderabad.
In his keynote address, Fr. Santiagu Thomas, Provincial of Hyderabad, reminded participants that “Salesians exist for young people — especially the poorest and most abandoned.” He highlighted Don Bosco’s vision of being a “priest of the young,” whose mission centred on their well-being and salvation.
The programme combined intellectual inputs, spiritual formation, and group activities. Participants, guided by Salesian and lay youth animators, reflected on themes such as Salesian youth spirituality, advocacy in society, sustainable leadership, environmental care, and youth ministry at the diocesan and Church levels. A panel discussion tackled pressing youth realities, including addictions, relationships, media connectivity, and the role of young people as changemakers.
The days were also enriched with prayer, adoration, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and moments of personal reflection. Cultural evenings with province-wise performances added vibrancy, while informal gatherings deepened friendships and community spirit.
On the final day, participants explored Hyderabad through a Darshan tour that included Tank Bund, Birla Temple, Charminar, and the Don Bosco Navajeevan Community, which supports youth at risk. This offered both cultural appreciation and a glimpse of Salesian outreach to marginalized young people.
Meticulously coordinated by Fr. Yeruva Joji SDB with the support of youth delegates from Kolkata, Delhi, and Hyderabad, the programme offered a holistic blend of leadership training, spirituality, and cultural exposure. It succeeded in equipping Salesian youth leaders to become faithful pilgrims and beacons of hope for the Church and society.
