‘Legacy of Love’ Series Launched to Mark 150 Years of Salesian Mission

News written by: Fr Biju Michael

The Salesian Family is marking a historic milestone this year—150 years since St. John Bosco sent out the first Salesian missionary expedition in 1875. To commemorate the anniversary, the South Asia Region has launched a new series of video animation resources under the banner “Legacy of Love – Celebrating 150 Years of Salesian Mission in the World (1875–2025).”

The first episode of the series was released on September 11, a day of remembrance for Salesian missionaries. The video spotlights Salesian service in South Sudan, one of the world’s youngest and poorest nations. It includes reflections on missionary life from Rector Major Fr. Fabio Attard and Councillor for the Salesian Mission Fr. Jorge Crisafulli.

The initiative, coordinated by the Salesian Provincials Conference of South Asia (SPCSA), aims to honour the dedication and sacrifice of Salesian missionaries worldwide, particularly those from South Asia who are serving in South Sudan. The series is intended not only to highlight their challenges and contributions but also to inspire missionary vocations.

The videos are being produced by BOSCOM, Missionary Animation, and Salesian Family South Asia, in collaboration with the Mission Sector and Social Communication Sector in Rome, the Salesian Family Secretariat in Rome, the East Africa Province, and the South Sudan Delegation. Editing work is being carried out at DBICA, Chennai. Members of the wider Salesian Family—including the FMA, MSMHC, VSDB, and Caritas Sisters of Miyazaki—have also contributed to the project.

SPCSA President Fr. Biju Michael recently visited South Sudan to encourage missionaries on the ground. The support of Salesian Procurators worldwide has also been acknowledged as vital to sustaining the mission.

The Legacy of Love series will continue with monthly episodes throughout 2025. Salesian communities, especially those in formation, are encouraged to watch and reflect together on the videos as a means of deepening their missionary spirit. The Salesian Family also invites Friends of Don Bosco to share in this celebration of faith and service.
