Our Leaders


The Rector Major as head of the Salesians together with the members of the General Council assist and animate the day -to- day governing and functioning of the various Salesian provinces across the world.


Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime was born on August 21, 1960 in Luanco-Gozon, Asturias, Spain. He was ordained a priest on July 4, 1987 in León.

A native of the Province of Leon, he earned a degree in Pastoral Theology and a Licentiate in Philosophy and Pedagogy.

He was a Provincial Delegate for Youth Ministry, Director of the School of Ourense, a member of the Provincial Council and the Provincial Vicar. From 2000-2006, he was the Provincial Superior.

After being part of the Preparatory committee for the 26th General Chapter in 2009, he was appointed the Provincial Superior of South Argentina, based in Buenos Aires. In this capacity he also got to know and work personally with the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio [now Pope Francis].

On March 25, 2014, he was elected by the 27th General Chapter as the Rector Major of the Salesian Congregation and the 10th Successor of Don Bosco. He was re-elected for a second term in 2020.

The General Chapter 28 of the Society of St. Francis de Sales / Salesians of Don Bosco, gathered at Valdocco, Turin, Italy in March 2020 elected Father Biju Michael Pulianmackal of the Salesian Province of Guwahati, India [ING], as the Don Bosco General Councillor for South Asia Region for 2020-2026.

Born on 19 March 1970 in Kerala, Father Biju Michael completed his novitiate in Shillong, making his first profession on 20 March 1988; his final profession, on 24 May 1996, and was ordained priest on 5 January 1999. He has a Doctorate in Moral Theology from the Lateran University (Accademia Alfonsiana) in Rome and three Master and Baccalaureate Degrees in English Literature, Philosophy and Theology. He also has Post Graduate Diplomas in Bioethics, and Human Resource Development. He was President of the Jerusalem Campus of the Salesian Pontifical University from 2011 to 2017 in Israel. At his election he was one of the Provincial Councillors of the Salesian Province of Guwahati, and Registrar of the Assam Don Bosco University in Guwahati, India.

He is an internationally published author of books and scholarly articles. He has already 20 books to his credit, some of which have been published in as many as 21 world languages. He has also won international awards for his audio-visual documentary productions.
