Salesian Cooperators of Tiruchy Province Initiates Programmes to Empower Underprivileged Youth
The Association of Salesian Cooperators of Tiruchy Province (INT) has launched an initiative at Amalan Academy, Thanjavur, to prepare underprivileged youth for government examinations and career opportunities. This marks a significant milestone, as it is one of the first such initiatives managed autonomously by Salesian Cooperators in the southern provinces of India.
With their active involvement across the 28 Salesian presences (SDB and FMA) in the Province, the Salesian Cooperators have continuously undertaken initiatives in collaboration with the Salesian mission for the young. A long-cherished vision has been to establish an independent mission under the guidance of the Salesians. This new endeavour marks the realization of that dream, bringing it to reality after years of aspiration.
The land for the academy was generously donated to the Tiruchy Province by Mr. Lawrence and Mrs. Lucial in memory of their late son, Amalan. The Province then constructed an animation hall on the site. In a remarkable move, the entire management of Amalan Academy is taken up by the Salesian Cooperators. The Salesian Cooperators have committed to sustaining this academy, with each local unit contributing Rs.1000 per month to meet operational expenses. In addition, they will support the acquisition of necessary equipment. The enrolment of candidates is based on recommendations from local Salesian Cooperators units, ensuring that the opportunity reaches those who need it most. With a capacity to accommodate up to 50 students at a time, the academy ensures high-quality training delivered by experienced faculty.
Special recognition and appreciation are due to Fr. John Barnabas SDB, the past delegates and coordinators of the Salesian Cooperators, and the executive team members, whose tireless efforts and vision have led to the successful realization of this initiative.
