Sacred Heart Theological College Launches Khasi Language Course for Pastoral Ministry

Sacred Heart Theological College (SHTC), Mawlai, inaugurated its Khasi Language Course on July 7, a formation programme to equip seminarians, religious, and missionaries with the linguistic and cultural skills needed for effective pastoral ministry among the Khasi people.
The inaugural programme brought together members of the college community, faculty, religious brothers and sisters enrolled in the course, and invited guests. Those present included Fr. Barnes Mawrie, Fr. Denis Lalfela, Fr. Aloysius Hemrom, Fr. A. L. Jose, Fr. Jose Chunkapura, Fr. Gervasis, Fr. Alexius Dkhar, and Fr. Timothy, the Khasi language instructor. Dr Sylvanus Lamare attended as the chief guest.
In the keynote address, Dr Lamare stressed that language is far more than a means of communication, describing it as a gateway to understanding a people's culture, history, traditions, and values. He urged participants to learn Khasi with dedication and enthusiasm, noting that acquiring the local language is a sign of respect, love, and closeness to the communities they are called to serve.
Building on that message, speakers highlighted that authentic evangelisation begins with listening, dialogue, and genuine accompaniment. They observed that learning Khasi would enable future priests and religious to build meaningful relationships, proclaim the Gospel more effectively, and share in the everyday life and aspirations of the local community.
The programme also celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Khasi people through a traditional Khasi song performed by Br. Aldo Kharkongor, Br. Eliphas, and Br. James Marbaniang, adding a vibrant cultural touch to the inauguration.
Finally, Fr. Barnes Mawrie outlined the structure of the language course and encouraged participants to engage actively in the learning process. He emphasised that mastering a language requires perseverance, regular practice, and openness to the culture and traditions of the people.
