SEED Initiative Brings New Wheels of Hope to Schoolgirls in Jaigaon

News reported by: Ankita Shelke and Fr Bento D'Souza for BIS Mumbai

Jaigaon, Nashik, February 12, 2026: Jaigaon village in Sinnar Block marked a significant step forward in girls’ education and empowerment as 30 school-going girls received bicycles under the Sustainable Energy, Education and Development (SEED) initiative. Aptly titled “Empowering Girls through Mobility for Education,” the programme addressed a critical barrier faced by rural students—safe and reliable access to schools.

Supported by General Mills India Private Limited, the initiative highlighted the role of mobility in improving educational access. By enabling girls to commute safely and efficiently, the programme aims to reduce physical strain, save time and improve regular school attendance, thereby strengthening their chances of continuing education.

The project is being implemented by BOSCONET in collaboration with Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra, ensuring active community participation and effective grassroots execution.

The distribution ceremony was attended by senior representatives from General Mills, including Ms. Jana Gaffaney, Vice President – Legal; Ms. Elena Cortes, Director – Legal; Ms. Jaishree Nilkhan, Head of External Relations; and Ms. Shivangi Sharma, Head – Legal, India. Local leadership was represented by the Village Sarpanch, Mr Santosh Daund, and the school Headmistress, Mrs Sonawane, reflecting strong community ownership of the initiative.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Jaishree Nilkhan encouraged the girls to pursue their studies with determination, noting that education is a pathway to independence and opportunity. Ms. Jana Gaffaney expressed her joy at being part of the programme and urged parents to ensure that their daughters receive the education they deserve. Ms. Shivangi Sharma commended the girls for their resilience in overcoming challenges and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence.

Speaking on the occasion, Fr Santhanam Ubagaram, National Director of BOSCONET, highlighted General Mills’ long-standing commitment to social responsibility. He noted that the company’s CSR initiatives in India contribute significantly to food security, sustainable agriculture and community empowerment, describing the Jaigaon initiative as an important step towards meaningful social transformation.

As the bicycles were handed over, the beneficiaries' excitement and confidence were evident. For the 30 girls, the bicycles symbolized more than transport—they represented access, safety, independence and a renewed commitment to education.

Through this collaborative effort, distance is being transformed into opportunity, ensuring that mobility no longer stands in the way of a girl’s right to learn and grow.
