The Taj Mahal, one of the world’s most celebrated monuments and an enduring symbol of love, welcomed the Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr Fabio Attard, during his visit to Delhi. He was accompanied by former Provincials and General Councillors, together with members of the South Asia Provincial Conference of the Salesians (SPSCA).

Built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal stands on the banks of the Yamuna. Constructed in white Makrana marble and completed in the 17th century, it is renowned for its symmetrical design, intricate inlay work, soaring dome, minarets and landscaped gardens.

Reflecting on the monument, Fr Attard described the Taj Mahal as a fitting wonder of the world, highlighting its grandeur and the human creativity behind its conception and execution.
“It is rightly so, the wonder of the world, both in its imagination and in its execution,” he said. “It is an expression of how human nature, when we’re able to express art, culture and those deep desires through architecture, we can achieve these levels of expression.”

The visit formed part of the Rector Major’s journey through South Asia and offered more than an opportunity to experience India’s cultural heritage. It became a moment of fraternity and fellowship for the Salesian leadership accompanying him. The shared journey created space for informal conversations, encounters and the strengthening of fraternal bonds among the confreres.

For the former Provincials, General Councillors and members of the SPSCA, accompanying the Rector Major to one of India’s most iconic landmarks was an experience of communion beyond the visit itself. The time spent together renewed their sense of belonging to the wider Salesian mission and encouraged a spirit of fraternity to carry back to the individual Provinces of South Asia.

The visit showed how shared journeys can build relationships, strengthen collaboration, and deepen commitment to the Salesian mission. It reminded everyone of the importance of walking together in the service of young people and the Church.

The Rector Major and the accompanying delegation thanked the Provincial of Delhi and his team for organising the visit, and the confreres of Don Bosco Alaknanda for their hospitality and support. Their efforts helped make the Agra visit a memorable part of the Rector Major’s journey through South Asia.
