Rector Major Releases Two Books on Don Bosco and Salesian Spirituality in New Delhi

News reported by: Bastin Nellissery SDB

At a function held in New Delhi, Rector Major Fr Fabio Attard released two books on Don Bosco’s priesthood and his vision of holiness for young people.

The first publication, Don Bosco the Priest, is the 13th volume in the Salesian Spirituality Series. Fr Attard released this book and presented a copy to Fr Biju Michael, General Councillor for the South Asia Region and one of its translators.

Authored by Jesus-Graciliano Gonzalez Miguel and translated by Francisco Cervantes Huitron and Fr Biju Michael, the book examines Don Bosco’s priesthood from historical and theological perspectives. It explores how his understanding of the priesthood became inseparable from his mission of education and evangelisation, and how this vision influenced the identity and formation of Salesian priests and consecrated educators.

The five-part volume traces the development of Don Bosco’s priestly identity, his pastoral practice, the foundation of the Salesian Congregation, his approach to the formation of Salesian priests, and the spirituality proper to the Salesian priest.

Fr Biju Michael expressed gratitude to Don Bosco Mondo, Bonn, for its support in the publication of the volume and acknowledged the contribution of all those involved in bringing the project to completion. Kristu Jyoti Publications in Bengaluru has published the book.

The second publication, The Children’s Call to Holiness and Don Bosco, authored by Fr Jose Kuttianimattahil SDB and published by Kristu Jyoti Publications, was also released by the Rector Major. Fr Attard then presented the author with a copy of the book.

The book argues that proposing holiness explicitly to children is an essential, rather than optional, dimension of the Salesian charism. Speaking at the release, Fr Jose said holiness is central to the identity of the Salesians and the wider Salesian Family.

He noted that Don Bosco’s educational mission went beyond forming young people as good citizens and Christians. He also stressed that holiness was a concrete possibility for them, not a distant ideal, and a vocation within the circumstances of everyday life.
