Fr. Punnolikunnel (PJ) Thomas (87) was given a fitting farewell by the Salesian Province of Guwahati and the church in northeast India on 28th of July, 2022. Most. Rev. Thomas Menamparambil SDB, Archbishop emeritus of Guwahati, was joined by more than 85 Priests, many religious and laity in the funeral mass of Fr. PJ Thomas which was held at St. Joseph's Co-Cathedral Church, Pan Bazar. The mortal remains of the holy Salesian was then laid to rest in the Christian Cemetery at Uzan Bazar. The funeral rites were presided over by Fr. Januarius S. Sangma SDB, the provincial.

Good Father PJ or Holy Father PJ as he was known and called by the people and confreres, entered into the joys of heaven on 26th July at 4:20 p.m. in St. John's hospital, Guwahati due to age related issues. Salesians, priests, religious, laity, past pupils, salesian cooperators, who received the sad news visited the Guwahati Provincial House from the evening of the 26th till the morning of the 28th to pay respect and homage to the late salesian.

Mr.Francis Ngajokpa, two time minister from Tadubi, Manipur, a past pupil of father asserted that the lessons taught by good Father PJ, by his life and actions helped him in his life. The condolence messages that were shared by the confreres, religious, parishioners who had seen, lived and experienced Father PJ, showed and hinted towards the humane nature, holiness, pastoral mindedness, intense goodness of Father PJ and him being an epitome of priesthood. Fr. Paul Olphindro Lyngkot SDB Salesian Provincial of Shillong, Fr. George Malieckal SDB of Shillong province, a representative from the diocese of Diphu, Mr. Allen Brooks, the former Chairman of the Assam State Commission for Minorities also conveyed thier condolences and expressed the goodness of Father PJ. Mr. Jose Kutty -nephew of Father PJ- who had come along with other nephews and niece from Kerala spoke about their uncle and thanked the Provincial and the confreres on behalf of the family.

In Father P.J. Thomas we have lost a wonderful human person, who was holy, a priest who showed the love of the Good Shepherd to the confreres and people with his life of simplicity and with his gentle smile. Indeed, a true son of Don Bosco has left this earthly life to be with the Heavenly Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to sing their praises along with our Blessed Mother, the angels and saints.
