First Salesian Cooperators Unit Established in Chhattisgarh as 14 Women Make Solemn Promise

News reported by: Fr Edward Sacrawat [INN]

In a historic milestone for the Salesian mission in Chhattisgarh, 14 women of Mary Help of Christians Parish, Jokbhala, made their solemn promise as Salesian Cooperators on May 16, establishing the first-ever unit of Salesian Cooperators in the state.

The spirit-filled celebration was presided over by Rev. Fr. Davis Maniparamben SDB, Provincial of the Salesian Province of Jesus the Good Shepherd, New Delhi. Addressing the gathering, he emphasised the important role of the laity within the Salesian Family, in line with Saint John Bosco's vision.

The newly inducted Cooperators completed their formation under the guidance of Fr. Chonhas Kujur and Fr. James Jainiwas. Through their public profession, they committed themselves to living the Salesian charism in their families and communities by promoting Gospel values, serving young people, and collaborating actively in parish and youth ministry.

As members of the worldwide Association of Salesian Cooperators founded by Don Bosco in 1876, the women pledged to live the Gospel in daily life, promote the Salesian Preventive System of education, serve the young with dedication and joy, and work closely with the Salesians in various apostolic activities.

Jokbhala, recognised as the first Salesian house in the region — formerly part of Madhya Pradesh and now in Chhattisgarh — has long been known for its missionary outreach among tribal communities. The establishment of the Salesian Cooperators unit further strengthens this legacy by empowering lay women to participate actively in Don Bosco’s mission of education and evangelisation, especially among the poor and marginalised.

The Salesian Province of New Delhi and members of the Salesian Family extended their congratulations and prayers to the new Cooperators, entrusting them to the protection of Mary Help of Christians as they begin their journey of faith and service.
