Don Bosco School Extends Emergency Relief to 280 Tea Worker Families
News written by: Fr C M Paul SDB
Responding to the acute hardships faced by workers of the Bagrakotte Tea Garden, where wages have remained unpaid for a prolonged period, Don Bosco School, Oodlabari, undertook a timely humanitarian initiative to support affected families within its parish territory.
Moved by the poverty and distress experienced by the tea workers and their families, the school mobilised resources to provide essential food supplies to nearly 280 families. The relief materials included rice, dal, and cooking oil, offering much-needed support during a period of economic uncertainty and hardship.
The emergency aid was formally handed over in the presence of Mrs Adwitiya Roka, Mrs Leena Lepcha, Mr Martin, Mr Xavier, Fr. (Dr.) Aju Kurian, Rector and Principal of Don Bosco School, along with students of the institution. To ensure transparency and equitable distribution, a local committee was tasked with packaging and systematically delivering the provisions to the beneficiary families.
Addressing the gathering, Fr. (Dr.) Aju Kurian expressed deep appreciation to the parents and students whose generous contributions during the Children’s Day Fete made the initiative possible. He highlighted that the funds collected through the school event were deliberately channelled to alleviate the suffering of the vulnerable community. Emphasising the educational value of such initiatives, he noted that acts of service play a vital role in nurturing empathy, social responsibility, and active citizenship among students.
“True education is not only about academic excellence,” Fr. Kurian remarked, “but about shaping hearts that can feel the pain of others and respond with love and action.”
The outreach programme stands as a strong expression of solidarity with marginalised communities and reflects the values promoted by Don Bosco School, Oodlabari. By combining education with social commitment, the institution continues to reaffirm its mission of forming young people who are not only intellectually competent but also deeply conscious of their responsibility towards society’s most vulnerable.
