Don Bosco Kohima Conducts Vision Screening, 328 to Get Free Spectacles

News reported by: Fr. Blasius Tete sdb, IND

Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Kohima, partnered with the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Nagaland, to conduct a two-day Vision Screening Programme under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment. The programme benefited hundreds of students by providing early eye care intervention—an initiative to promote preventive healthcare for school-going children. The programme's team examined 423 students, identified 328 who require corrective lenses, and will provide them with free spectacles.

Dr Phyantsuthung Kikon, Joint Director and State Programme Officer (SPO) at the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, led the screening and emphasised the importance of addressing vision-related challenges early to support children’s academic and personal development.

Health professionals involved in the programme stated that undiagnosed vision problems can significantly affect a child’s ability to read, write, concentrate, and participate actively in classroom activities. They expect early detection and timely treatment to improve students’ learning outcomes, confidence, and overall well-being.

The screening was carried out by a team comprising personnel from the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK), along with Khrievizo from Viswema Primary Health Centre and Khrielanuo from Zubza Primary Health Centre. Thanks to their efforts, students received thorough assessments and appropriate recommendations. Recognising the critical role good vision plays in educational success, parents welcomed the initiative. Essential support—free eye screening and spectacles—may otherwise be difficult for many families to access.

School authorities expressed gratitude to Dr Kikon and the medical team for their commitment and professional service. They noted that the programme demonstrates a shared commitment to student welfare and underscores the importance of integrating health initiatives into the educational environment.
