Don Bosco College–Kurla Celebrates Onam with Traditional Sadhya and Experiential Learning

Don Bosco College–Kurla marked Onam with a traditional Sadhya organised by the Department of Hospitality Studies, blending Kerala’s rich cultural and culinary heritage with professional hospitality skills in an immersive learning experience.

Celebrated over ten days, Onam is one of Kerala’s most significant festivals, symbolising togetherness, prosperity, tradition and community. At Don Bosco College–Kurla, the celebration allowed students to understand and experience these cultural traditions while applying their hospitality training in a practical setting, reinforcing the value of learning through celebration.

Members of the BOSCOM Executive Council, the college management, and faculty members of the Department of Hospitality Studies attended the programme. They joined the traditional Sadhya prepared and served by the students and appreciated their culinary skills and professional presentation.

A total of 54 students from the three-year Bachelor’s in Hospitality Studies programme and the School of Empowerment took part in food production, food and beverage service, bakery operations, cultural performances, floral decoration, event coordination, and presentations and demonstrations.

The Sadhya featured 31 traditional dishes. Students also demonstrated the customary arrangement of food on banana leaves. They followed the traditional sequential method of serving the meal, giving participants a practical insight into Kerala’s distinctive culinary traditions and leaving them with a clearer understanding of the festival’s cultural significance.

For the students, the celebration served as both a cultural and a professional learning experience. It helped them gain a deeper understanding of Onam’s significance while showing how cultural knowledge can complement professional hospitality skills.
